Best and Worst Habits for Your Gums

November 28, 2024

When considering the condition of your oral health, don’t forget your gums, a supporting player in the scheme of things! We mean literally a supporting player: Your gums play a critical role in supporting your teeth! That’s why our gum expert — the periodontist at Maryland Center for Periodontics and Dental Implants wants to support your oral health by providing some dos and don'ts from the American Academy of Periodontology relating to keeping your gums in the pink!

Best practices:

  • Regular dental checkups allow your dentist or periodontist to spot and treat any potential gum problems before they become serious or irreversible.
  • Using the proper brushing technique is vitally important. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush to keep from irritating your gums and causing tooth erosion. Brush twice a day for two minutes each time.
  • Flossing once a day gets rid of the food particles and plaque from between your teeth. There are many varieties — waxed, unwaxed, and tape are just a few. Find the style that’s most comfortable and efficient for you.
  • Consider using an antiseptic mouthwash to help kill bacteria and reduce inflammation.
  • Watch what you eat! A diet that’s rich in vegetables, fruits and whole grains is good for your overall health, which includes your gums.
  • Tobacco products like cigarettes, vaping and of course chewing tobacco significantly raise the likelihood of gum disease.

Worst practices:

  • If you routinely skip brushing and flossing, the resulting buildup of plaque and tartar can irritate your gums.
  • Conversely, brushing too hard or using a hard-bristled toothbrush can damage your gums and protective tooth enamel.
  • If you like to chew on ice or your pen, stop! This common but onerous habit can chip your teeth and cause gum damage.
  • Got a sweet tooth? Diets high in sugar can lead to tooth decay and gum disease.

At Maryland Center for Periodontics and Dental Implants we want our patients to enjoy optimal oral health and hope these tips help! Please contact us today for an appointment.
